Well, as if I don’t have enough problems in my life. I hate the dreaded upgrade of a Windows operating system. I have learned my lesson when it comes to Microsuck. Albeit, the lessons were hard-learned and tore apart many a night and weekend.
I have also had my share of Linux operating system upgrades. I have primarily dealt with Mandrake/Mandriva software. I have had a few bumps with that, but primarily due to the intricacies of server settings and optional modules, etc.
Last night and today have been my first experience with a Mac system. Finding good info online (for free) can be a little more difficult than it once was, let me tell you. But when it comes to Mac stuff, the info is much less available and even scarier to note when you’ve nearly reached the end of all searches with little to nothing to find regarding your problem. Well luckily, I found some good info and thought of sharing that here. Adding another link to the search engine pools of wisdom will only help the next poor soul that’s at the end of sanity!
First off, don’t cut corners on cash when it comes to buying any OS! The price tag looks really sweet when comparing an upgrade disc to a retail package. Yeah, you get the warm fuzzies about having a manual (really just a short story of newbie styled retail jargon) but the most important thing is what options are available when you start the whole install process. What I mean, is what type of install/upgrade are you hoping to accomplish with the upgrade disc? Don’t plan for much and that’s what you’ll get. At least you won’t be disappointed then.
For my experience with the upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11, to Leopard 10.5.6, would have been even quicker if I hadn’t first tried to do a general upgrade. I would save you the trouble by saying, just do an “Archive and Install”. I tried the upgrade and I was rewarded with a reboot to Apple’s version of the “Blue Screen of Death”! After some research, I found that I would have been better off just doing the archive and install…..which is what I ended up doing.
So after only a day and a night, I only had to reinstall my Dreamweaver 8 and my Eve-Online client. My MacBook Pro is back up and upgraded. Nice and tidy.
