My Novel

I have been bitten by the reading bug, again!

I go through phases where I tend to burn out something and then give it up for however long it takes to feel fresh again. I am ADHD, with strong tendencies to Hyperfocus. My 11 year old daughter has found the joy of reading fantasy and fiction novels. She is now working on the Eragon series of books and has recently finished the first book of the continuing Percy Jackson series.

She has shown interest in Greek Mythology and was, as most kids are, a bit confused about the thought of polytheism. We are a family that has strong spiritual ties to the almighty God, Yahweh, and I found it only a little difficult to explain it to her in words she could easily understand. She was intrigued to hear my idea of how the stories of the many different gods and goddesses must have come about. I believe there were real people, and real experiences with spiritual beings, that suffered a few millennium of “whisper-down-the-alley”. The stories became convoluted and misunderstood, until the reality of the stories were no longer important and the fantasy took on a life of its own.

I thought, wouldn’t it be cool if somebody would explain the events of confusion, from the perspective of someone who lived in the times of when the stories began? My wife thought it was a great idea, but she mistook my idea for something historical, like a thesis. I decided to go the route of a fantasy/fiction novel, with the life struggles of the first family. I would read excerpts for my wife and kids and I would get suggestions from my wife and nods of approval from my daughters. My 11 year old would also chime in with excited “write more Daddy!” comments.

So needless to say, I have almost no spare time anymore. I am thoroughly enjoying writing a novel, that will hopefully be published one day. It would be nice to have a little extra money to take the kids to Disneyland and I hope people will enjoy my storytelling and find a new respect for historical, biblical and even mythological characters.

This page will be host to snippets of story that will be updated from time to time, with a status of my progress. Oh, by the way, the title of the book is Origin.
I have been writing it since July 2nd, 2011.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 – Dawn

Lumiel’s abilities were second only to Elyon’s and slightly greater in strength to Mikhail, His Captain of the Guardians. Among Lumiel’s considerable powers, he controlled the air. He could travel farther and faster than any of the other immortals. He could also control how quickly anyone else travelled the celestial air ways. He also had the ability to create, in a way. It was more like the ability to recreate. Things that Elyon had either brought into existence from the ether, or created from the earth, were his to alter in any fashion he desired. Because of this unique ability, Lumiel was even able to change his own physical form. He could be almost anything or anyone he desired. He would arrogantly display his powers to other immortals and felt that he was equal to Elyon in every way. He would often think about what eternity would be like if he were in charge.

His expertise in changing his own shape provided him with the perfect avenue to begin his ultimate plan. Lumiel realized that the easiest way to bring on the change of power would be through deception. He thought his plan was fool proof since he would deceive immortals and Elyon as well. To begin, he needed to make others believe he was unhappy with the form Elyon had given him. He knew it would need to be a drastic change, but one that would still appeal to his own vanity. After all, he was beautiful and he knew that his beauty had aided him in the past. He did not want to lose the influence that it gave him. Besides, he could always change back when he was safely in power, if he even cared to. But what shape could bring about the desired effect? He would need to shock some into disbelief and others into unwavering belief. Of all the things that Elyon had created, Lumiel admired and was jealous of a more recently created being. Although it was a lower immortal, living within his realm of earth, it was something beautiful and completely unique. He had studied its mannerisms and learned all he could about what made it different. He settled on shifting himself into the form of a female.
